When to Blow Things Up
As any contractor can tell you, demolition can be tricky. It usually leaves a nasty mess that must be removed from the site, and things can be difficult to take apart when they were put together effectively. Fortunately, these downsides are nowhere to be found in Town Star. Demolitions can happen very quickly and easily, in most cases rewarding you in-game money instead of costing you an arm and a leg. But with this great destructive power comes great responsibility. You must learn when it’s a good idea to destroy a building or an obstacle, as well as when it’s not.
How Demolition Works
Pretty much anything can be destroyed in a Town Star town, aside from the ground itself. Demolitions fall into 2 main categories: Those that reward you money, and those that cost you money.
Rewarding Demolitions - Anything that you paid money to place in your town will reward you money when you remove it from your town through demolition. Instead of spending money on these demolitions, you will receive 25% of the building’s original cost. For example, a Storehouse (originally $20k) will reward you $5000 when demolished.
Costly Demolitions - Naturally occurring obstacles can be quite expensive to clear. These include (ordered by increasing demolition cost) shrubs, marshes, trees and rocks.
Shrubs - These little bushy areas are cheap to clear and offer no proximity benefits.
Marshes - These pond areas are fairly cheap to clear, but they provide the benefit of 1 passive unit of water to surrounding tiles.
Trees - Lumberjacks can harvest trees for wood, but it can take a long time for them to regrow. Eventually, most seasoned Town Star players remove natural trees in favor of more controlled Tree Farms. Each tree costs $15k to remove.
Rocks - These piles of rocks are good for nothing in the game, and they cost $40k each to remove from your path. You’ll almost always find them in an inconvenient location.
Reasons to Destroy
You Don’t Need it - This is the simplest and most obvious reason to obliterate a building or pond. You wouldn’t want to continue paying wages to a worker who is sleeping all the time, or to a worker whose productions are constantly being wasted. Constantly evaluate your entire town, trimming the fat and removing buildings that are not needed.
It’s in Your Way - If there is an obstacle in your way, Town Star lets you make quick work of destroying it, as long as you have the money. Don’t get carried away destroying future obstacles too early in the game though, or you run the risk of spending all your dough.
You Need Money - This is usually a terrible reason to destroy things, but there are a few exceptions. If your town is in such dire straits that you're desperate for demolition money, you should probably consider giving up and starting a new town. One great exception is when you sell ponds at the beginning of your game for some extra quick spending money. Starting ponds are never ideally placed, and you could usually do a lot more with the money produced from destroying them.
Demolition and Wages
There are certain situations in which temporarily destroying a building is a good idea. Usually these have to do with high wage costs. For example, a Refinery’s Chemical Engineer has a wage of $200 per minute. If a particular Refinery is inactive for a long period of time (more than 75 minutes), then it may be more cost effective to destroy and rebuild later than to let it sit inactive.
The Lumberjack House is an interesting case. They build instantly with no materials cost, but it is difficult to control the rate at which they harvest wood when dealing with natural trees. Additionally, Lumberjacks never stop their duties. As long as there are trees, your Lumberjacks will never rest. Sometimes it is necessary to destroy a Lumberjack House or two temporarily to mitigate your wood production and storage.
